Chapter Ten
âI know you said to drop it at your foster mumâs place, but I wanted to make things up to you.â Jared hooked a lock of hair behind his ear and offered me a grin more sheep than wolf. âI hope you know Iâd never do anything to hurt you.â
My fingertips pressed to the thin line scratched into my neck. âMaybe not on purpose but until you get helpââ
âI am.â Jared shoved a business card into my hand. âThis guy runs a support group up in Auckland and Iâve attended two emergency meetings since you left. Heâs even put me in touch with the local chapter down here, so I donât miss any sessions.â
âYouâll need more than a support group to overcome your tendencies,â Aunt Florentine said with a derisive sniff. âSome mate listening to your woes in a meeting isnât much help when the moon turns your body into a beast and screws around with your head.â
The tips of Jaredâs ears turned bright pink and he mumbled something into his chest.
âWhatâs that?â
âI said, theyâve got buildings with restraints everywhere theyâre set up. All I need to do is turn up on the full moon and theyâll lock me up, safe and sound.â
âOnce youâve turned up on their doorstep and gone through with the deed, Iâll believe you.â Aunt Florentine picked an apple from the fruit bowl and rubbed it vigorously against her blouse. âUntil then, itâs nothing more than a few random facts nobody cares about.â
âI swear, Desi. Iâll go through with it.â Jared reached for my hand and I let him hold it for a second before jerking away. âIâm so ashamed of how I behaved before you left.â
âHow did you even know where to find me?â A dozen emotions were playing a jangled melody on my nerves, so I grasped for something tangible. âI never told you where I was heading.â
Jaredâs eyes shifted away from mine to feign interest in the floorboards instead.
A nasty flush heated the skin on my chest. âDid Iris tell you I was here?â
âShe might have let something slipââ
âFat lot of good she is.â I slapped his hands away when he tried to touch me again, pacing back and forth. âI specifically told her not to let you know where to find me, yet here you are. She couldnât even keep her lip buttoned for a day.â
âDonât be harsh on her,â Jared said, his eyes darting between me and Aunt Flo. âShe didnât tell me. I just saw part of an email sheâd printed out and put two and two together.â
âShe doesnât know youâre here?â
His Adamâs apple bobbed up and down as the redness oozed down from his ears, turning his forehead blotchy. âWell, I didnât say that.â
I reached the window and smacked a hand on the sill before turning. âNo, of course not, because sheâs the one who organised the repair on my locket, isnât she? You couldnât even do that yourself.â
If the necklace hadnât been so important to me, I would have thrown it in his face and ordered him to leave.
